Photography session for the Central Secondary School for the deaf

Lokopakar curated a 3-day photography workshop for 28 deaf students, following with an
exhibition of the pictures they took at the WOW festival.
Initially, Lokopakar planned to conduct the workshop for 20 students but due to the heightened
interest of the students to participate, the number was increased to 28 students. Students got to
learn about photography and take pictures in and around their home and schools.
The outcome of the workshop is shown in exhibit 2 which were also exhibited in the WOW
Festival. Three of the students also got an opportunity to volunteer/ participate in the exhibition
where they got to interact with the visitors and explain their idea behind the pictures they took.

“If given opportunity, the work done by the deaf community can also be showcased
on a national and international level. This makes us proud of our community.”

They were delighted to be able to share their ideas, interact, answer the questions and share their overall
experience with the visitors in person with the help of the interpreter stationed at the exhibition.
Exhibition
The outcome/ pictures taken in the Photography workshop was showcased in the festival as a form
of an exhibition. Thousands of visitors got the opportunity to see the pictures taken by the students
and learn about their stories behind each of the pictures firsthand. This was possible with the help
of the interpreters present on site all the time.
The students got to answer a lot of questions and express their feelings with ease. The workshop
was initiated with the goal to make the deaf school students understand that photography can be a
form of communication and that’s what the exhibition was able to do precisely. The learning from
the workshop and the exhibition were unmatchable to what was initially expected.
